  17. <p>The Hani murder investigation points to a right-wing conspiracy
  18. </p>
  19. <p>     Hours after black leader Chris Hani was gunned down, the
  20. government said the assassination appeared to be the work of a
  21. lone fanatic, Janusz Walus, of the far-right Afrikaner
  22. Resistance Movement. Last week, however, police officials
  23. rounded up more suspects and confirmed suspicions of a
  24. conspiracy. Two names stunned the country: Clive Derby-Lewis,
  25. a senior official of the Conservative Party, the "respectable
  26. face" of right-wing whites, and his journalist wife Gabrielle.
  27. </p>
  28. <p>     As police investigated possible international links, the
  29. African National Congress feared that right-wing whites posed
  30. a bigger threat to pro-democracy negotiations than previously
  31. thought. Another complication: Conservative Party leader Andries
  32. Treurnicht died last Thursday at the age of 72, following heart
  33. surgery. He may be succeeded by a radical figure, deputy leader
  34. Ferdinand Hartzenberg.
